| Title | Site of the Chicago Public Library, Central Library, looking north from Washington Street, ca. 1890 |
| Description | There were boardwalks surrounding Dearborn Park. Trolley car tracks can be seen on Washington Street. Controversy and legal squabbles troubled the efforts to build a permanent home for the Chicago Public Library. The search became a high priority in the late 1880's. Frederick Hild, Chief Librarian at the time, campaigned to move the library from its quarters in City Hall to a lot fronting Michigan Ave. The architectural firm of Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge won a building design competition and construction began.
