| Title | Timothy B. Blackstone Memorial Branch Library, exterior view, 1904 |
| Description | In January 1904, Mrs. Timothy B. Blackstone presented the Chicago Public Library with its first full-service branch library at 4904 South Lake Park Avenue. The building was named in memory of Timothy B. Blackstone, president of the Chicago & Alton Railroad (1864-1899), and a well-known Chicago philanthropist. The building was built of gray-white Concord granite with bronze doors and a rotunda with a dome in the Tiffany style. Chicago artist, Oliver Dennett Grover created the dome's decorative panels, each with a theme illustrating literature, fine arts, science, and labor. A renovation program on the Blackstone Branch Library began in 1977; it was completed with the rededication of the building on November 18, 1980. |
