| Title | Workmen building the upper stories of the Chicago Public Library, Central Library, ca. 1896 |
| Description | Many of the artisans and craftsmen who built the first Central Library were immigrants to Chicago. Germans, Swedes, Norwegians, Hungarians, Italians, and Turks brought the skills of their native homelands, and worked with marble, cast stone, wood, and plaster, to build the library. Less than 100 years later, the skills of a new generation were sought in the construction of the new Central Library. The Harold Washington Library Center would be built using the performance specifications of an earlier era: over 725 talented craftsmen were employed to construct handiwork in plaster, marble and wood at the Harold Washington Library Center. |
