DescriptionThe Austin neighborhood, named for the Honorable Henry W. Austin, came into existence in the mid-19th century as an independent village seven miles west of Chicago. At the time that this photograph was taken, the Austin Library Association Building contained club rooms, a public hall and village library rooms. The building, constructed in the Queen Anne style, with wrap-around porches on the first and second floors, was also home to the Oaks Club. The Austin Community Collection, held in the Library's Special Collections & Preservation Division, includes materials on Henry W. Austin, as well as the Bassett, Burkhart, Braucher, Hankinson, Moore and Race families. Black and white photo, 7 x 5 in.
