Chicago Public Library Bookmobile Service, ca. 1940
TitleChicago Public Library Bookmobile Service, ca. 1940
DescriptionThe Legler Regional Library's experimental trailer service began on April 19, 1940, and was staffed by two librarians, Irmgard Bradley and Catherine Vitha. This new method of delivery used a small trailer hooked up to a car. Later, specially outfitted vehicles called bookmobiles carried larger collections, were staffed with a small circulation desk, and were driven by professional drivers. The Legler Branch also initiated a juvenile trailer service in 1940, serving the Peck and Mary Lyon schools. Black and white photo, 10 x 8 in.
