DescriptionThe Chicago Public Library Regional Library at 95th and Halsted Streets was named in honor of Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950), a historian, educator and author who was born in New Canton, Virginia, the son of former slaves. With no formal education until he was 20 years old, Woodson completed his high school studies in two years, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Chicago in 1907, received his M.A. from the same institution in 1908, and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1912. The Chicago Public Library bearing his name opened in 1976. Black and white photo, 7 x 7 in.
