DescriptionMary Ann Bickerdyke (1817-1901) of Illinois served as a Union nurse in the hospital at Cairo, Illinois and in field hospitals at a number of battles, including Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Vicksburg and Atlanta. Soldiers called her "Mother" Bickerdyke. She fought for sanitary conditions, proper diets and medication, and traveled to major cities to raise funds for the sick and wounded. After the war, she lobbied to secure pensions for Civil War nurses and veterans. Bickerdyke is wearing ribbons of the Women's Relief Corps.
