DescriptionThe black mourning band around Grant's arm is in remembrance of President Abraham Lincoln, who was assassinated in April 1865. Just a year before, Lincoln had summoned Grant (1822-1885) to Washington, where he was made general in chief of all Union armies and promoted to Lieutenant General, a grade last held by George Washington.
