| Title | Bas-relief, Abraham Lincoln |
| Description | This bas-relief of Abraham Lincoln is made of bronze from Confederate cannons. The Grand Army of the Republic commissioned it, and a matching bas-relief of President James Garfield, for Robert Lincoln and two other men in appreciation of their efforts to secure "twelve bronze pieces of rebel cannon... weighing in all 10, 253 pounds, for which we [GAR] have paid $1, 948.07." The GAR wanted the bronze to melt down and produce badges for its members and to raise funds. The bas-reliefs were presented to Robert Lincoln (Abraham Lincolns son and U.S. Secretary of War, 1881-1885), Stephen V. Benet (Chief of Ordnance, U.S. Army), and D.S. Alexander (past GAR Department Commander of the Department of the Potomac) at the GAR Annual Encampment in 1885. In 1977 Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith, the last direct descendant of Abraham Lincoln, donated this set to the Chicago Public Library. |
