Hamlin Park Women's Club
Hamlin Park Women's Club
TitleHamlin Park Women's Club
DescriptionThe Hamlin Park Women's Club was a pioneer community women's group. Originally founded in 1892 by Sarah Gane as the Elm Street Mother's Club (after the Elm Street settlement house where meetings were held weekly), the name was changed to the Eli Bates Women's Club in 1908 and again, ultimately, to the Hamlin Park Women's Club in 1916. Meetings were held twice a month at the Hamlin Park fieldhouse club rooms. The club's original objective was to encourage the study of all subjects pertaining to good citizenship. The objectives were later expanded to include education, home economics, art, and mutual helpfulness. According to the September 25, 1935 Belmont Booster, the club contributed greatly to the war effort during the First World War.
