DescriptionOn what would have been King's 58th birthday, January 15, 1987, Mayor Harold Washington attended an Operation PUSH celebration to honor Dr. King. Washington was presented with a plaque in recognition of the fact that Washington was the first State Representative to initiate a bill calling for Dr. King's birthday to be a State holiday. Upon his acceptance of the award, Washington said that the campaign to recognize the day had been "a labor of love".
