Mayor Washington at the KOCO groundbreaking ceremony
Mayor Washington at the KOCO groundbreaking ceremony
TitleMayor Washington at the KOCO groundbreaking ceremony
DescriptionThis photograph was taken at the last public event before Mayor Harold Washington's death. At the urging of the City's Department of Housing, Kenwood-Oakland Community Organization (KOCO) in 1983 won a grant of $1.8 million as start-up money for the building of 70 low-and-moderate income housing units. With additional funding provided by the Department of Housing, the project broke ground on November 25, 1987, a few hours before the Mayor collapsed at his desk in City Hall. KOCO was the type of neighborhood organization Washington had particularly strong admiration for and he was especially proud to be able to work so closely with Chicago communities.
