DescriptionAt Avenues Restaurant, 211 E. Chicago Ave., Mayor Harold Washington attended a reception and press conference on July 30, 1987 to announce the opening of an AIDS Research Center. Washington was asked to co-chair, along with Illinois Governor James R. Thompson, a fundraising event in September, 1987, the proceeds of which were divided evenly between the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AMFAR) and the AIDS Foundation. Pictured with the Mayor at the press conference is Abigail Van Buren (Dear Abby), a member of AMFAR.
