Mayor Washington at the Bud Billiken Parade
Mayor Washington at the Bud Billiken Parade
TitleMayor Washington at the Bud Billiken Parade
DescriptionA very important date for Mayor Harold Washington was the annual Bud Billiken Parade. On August 8, 1987, he took part in the 58th parade. Over 500, 000 people lined the route, making it one of the largest parades in the country. The Bud Billiken Parade was the brainchild of Robert S. Abbott, the late publisher of the Chicago Defender, who wanted to pay tribute to the newspaper's newsboys. Bud Billiken is a mythical character who serves as a symbol of pride, happiness, and hope for young black people.
