| Description | Rendering of Lurie Garden showing spring foliage by Gustafson Partners. Initially named "Shoulder Garden", the Lurie Garden was designed by the international team of Kathryn Gustafson of Gustafson Guthrie Nichol Ltd in Seattle, Piet Oudolf of the Netherlands, and Robert Israel of Los Angeles, and was the winning entry in the international garden competition held in 2000. Landscape architect Katherine Gustafson is based in London as well as Seattle, and has worked extensively in France and other parts of Europe. Her landscapes reflect an interest in abstract form, spatial/structural clarity, and contextual relationships. Piet Oudolf is a world-renowned planting designer and plant expert. His planting designs combine a strong palette of colors and textures with attention to seasonal change and a have slightly wild, natural look, often incorporating ornamental grasses. Robert Israel is an internationally acclaimed lighting designer for opera and theater. In addition to designing lighting for the day/night transition of the Lurie Garden, Israel's design input contributed to a theatrical sense of scale, narrative and framing in the spaces throughout the Garden. |
