| Title | Lurie Garden, fall rendering, ca. 2000 |
| Description | Rendering of Lurie Garden showing fall foliage by Gustafson Partners. According to planting designer Piet Oudolf, the colors in the garden reach a "crescendo" in the fall. As is shown in the rendering, the garden is divided into two plates, a light plate (left) and a dark plate (right) divided by a "seam", which follows the curve of the old shore line of Lake Michigan, and the railroad right of way below the rooftop the Garden rests upon. The light plate has qualities of the Great Plains and is open and sunny, while the dark plate is lush and shady, and has a feeling of wetness which alludes to the location's history. The seam is made up of a wooden boardwalk with a waterway below and to the side. The boardwalk hints at the primitive wooden bridges that were a first step in Chicago's growth out of the swampy grounds below. |
