| Title | BP Bridge, spanning Columbus Drive, November 22, 2003 |
| Description | The central box girder is lowered into place on top of a central concrete pier in the median strip of Columbus Drive during a 12-hour period when the busy six-lane road was closed to traffic. The structural steel for the BP Bridge, including these box girders, was made by Littell Steel of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Bridge was then assembled in Pittsburgh, without the decorative stainless steel shingles, or scales, to make sure it fit together perfectly. This test-assembly paid off because during the actual installation, the workers had to work swiftly and there was no room for error. As Mike Eggan, of Walsh Construction Company, general contractors for the BP Bridge, said, "When the parts showed up, they all fit. They just slipped together.” |
