TitleJay Pritzker Pavilion, construction of Great Lawn, November 14, 2003
DescriptionLooking south, from the headdress of the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, as work continues on the Lawn. Here, piles of sand and gravel are ready to be spread over the surface of the lawn. The Great Lawn was designed to be usable even after inclement weather. As most visitors to Chicago know, summer downpours can be short but heavy. By constructing the Lawn using layers of gravel and sand, the grass can be dry enough to sit on within 10 to 15 minutes of a heavy rain.
