| Description | Looking northwest from the back of the Great Lawn toward the stage and headdress of the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. With a little over two weeks left before Millennium Park opened to the public this photograph shows that the Jay Pritzker Pavilion is almost ready. Frank Gehry's aspirations for an airy and light trellis have been realized and the state-of-the-art sound system is in place. Acousticians Rick Talaske and Jonathan Laney masterminded the sound system which resulted in an incredibly high quality of sound delivered to the Great Lawn, no small feat for an outdoor concert venue. Architect Frank Gehry had experience working with music venues and pavilions in the past and he utilized this bank of knowledge when designing the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. Working closely with Gehry, Talaske and Laney used the architecture of the Pavilion to enhance the sound delivery. As Gehry stated, around 80% of the design of the ribbons and headdress is designed to get the sound out of the stage and to the audience. The 52 pairs of speakers suspended from the trellis, which can be seen here, take the sound further back to the Great Lawn. A computerized delay system is used to deliver the sound to the various speakers at fractionally different times which results in a high quality sound at both the front and back of the Great Lawn. |
