| Description | An oblique view of Frank Gehry's architectural model for the Jay Pritzker Music Pavilion in Millennium Park. Gehry produced several models with alternate designs. The most elaborate model, shown here, inspired by Johannes Vermeer's painting, "Woman with a Water Jug”, was selected for the final design. Frank Gehry won the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1989, beginning a friendship between the world-renowned architect and the Pritzker family. Gehry jokes that the friendship began when he delayed cashing the prize check for 6 months. Gehry had been honored for his body of work that stresses the art of architecture, as well as the functionality of a structure. Included in Gehry's portfolio at the time of his Millennium Park commission were the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, the Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the Experience Music Project in Seattle, Washington. Gehry also had a wealth of experience building or renovating music venues, such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California, the Merriweather-Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, and the Concord Pavilion in Concord, California. |
