TitleCrown Fountain, assembly in Melbourne, Florida, ca. March 24, 2004
DescriptionOnce the glass bricks were made by L.E. Smith in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania, they were sent to the offices of Circle Redmont, Inc., to be assembled into steel grids, shown here.

In Plensa's design of Crown Fountain, no structure to support the glass bricks is visible. The team had to figure out how to build the tower walls 50 feet tall, with what are essentially glass tiles, only 1 7/8 inches wide, yet keep the structure hidden. They turned to Circle Redmont, Inc., in Melbourne, Florida, which fabricates the steel grids that hold glass blocks in place in New York City sidewalks above the subway. Circle Redmont was able to modify their design to accommodate the glass bricks for Crown Fountain in stainless steel grids, which are welded together on the Fountain. Each tower is made up of 44 grids, and they are virtually invisible, even close up.
