| Title | Crown Fountain, fabricating the glass bricks, May 21, 2003 |
| Description | A mold for casting the glass bricks at the L.E. Smith Glass Company in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania. To obtain the clearest possible glass brick, the bricks were cast in these molds using a pressed-glass technique that has changed little since the Middle Ages. Molten glass is gathered on rods, similar to a honey-dipper, and then the mixture of sand and soda ash is allowed to drop off the end into the mold. Given the size of the mold, however, more than one rod was needed to fill the mold and a second worker had to immediately follow the first to ensure a smooth, clear brick. |
