| Description | An early sketch of Crown Fountain by Jaume Plensa. The Crown Foundation agreed to fund a water feature at Millennium Park in December 1999 and invited 3 artists to submit proposals. The Crowns left the scope of the fountain as broad as possible, with very few restrictions, and Jaume Plensa was selected soon afterwards. In this early sketch the concept is clear: the fountain is comprised of two rectangular towers of glass brick at either end of a reflecting, or "skin" pool. Behind the glass brick, light emitting diodes (LED) project changing images on the two facing sides of the towers. The faces of individual people are shown and periodically a jet of water shoots out of their mouths into the reflecting pool. In tandem with the jet of water, a large volume of water cascades down each tower drenching those below. The skin pool measures 232' long by 48' wide.
Jaume Plensa was born in Barcelona in 1955 and was relatively unknown in the United States at the time of the Crown Fountain commission. His body of work reflects the multiculturalism of Barcelona and Catalonia where he grew up, and defies a signature style. Some of his most acclaimed outdoor work includes The Star of David in Stockholm, Bridge of Light in Jerusalem, and Blake in Gateshead in Gateshead, England. |
