| Title | Cloud Gate, sander, May 25, 2005 |
| Description | Once the seams had been ground, the sculpture's surface was treated with a 15 pound air-driven belt sander (sometimes referred to as a road grader), pictured here. All of the tools used in grinding and polishing Cloud Gate were custom-built. This belt sander has roller skates on it to prevent the removal of too much material which is a danger on a curved surface. The belt sanders smoothed away the 1/8-inch weld sticking out from the sculpture's surface in a procedure called "knocking the snot off". |
