| Title | Cloud Gate, attaching steel plates, May 18, 2004 |
| Description | Tack welding the seams between the steel plates surrounding the omphalos. Although the tent came down and the sculpture was open for public viewing when Millennium Park officially opened July 16, 2004, the sculpture was not yet finished. The plates were held in place with tack welds and supported from inside with cables and rigging until January 2005 when the tent was rebuilt over the sculpture for the final welding, grinding and polishing of the sculpture. Plasma welding technology was used to create full-penetration, or full-strength welds on each of the seams of the sculpture. The rigging and cables were removed from the inside of the sculpture when this process was complete. |
