DescriptionTack welding the seams between the steel plates surrounding the omphalos. Welding the seams between the steel plates was one of the most difficult parts of the process of putting the sculpture together. Two crews of welders, one inside and one outside, welded each seam simultaneously, working in opposite directions. The welders had to practice welding in physically awkward and uncomfortable positions to prepare for the conditions they would face when welding the sculpture.
