| Description | Looking east across Lake Shore Drive toward the Queen's Landing at Monroe Harbor in Chicago. The original plan was for the sculpture (named Cloud Gate in 2004) to be fully assembled and shipped from Oakland, California to Chicago's Monroe Harbor via the Panama Canal and the St. Lawrence Seaway. A study was done of the projected route the sculpture would take from the Queen's Landing at Monroe Harbor to Millennium Park, looking at whether the dock and streets in between were strong enough to support the 110-ton weight of the sculpture. The study also assessed obstacles that would have to be removed, for example overhanging light poles and traffic signals, if the 33 feet tall sculpture were to be maneuvered unimpeded through city streets. It was eventually concluded that it would be impractical and time-consuming to ship the sculpture whole, and MTH Industries, an architectural glass and metal contracting company of Villa Park, Illinois, was hired to assemble and complete the sculpture on site after the parts and pieces were trucked to Chicago. |
