| Description | A computer rendering shows the scale of the proposed sculpture by Anish Kapoor. Cloud Gate is a massive 110-ton, 66 feet long by 33 feet high, stainless steel sculpture at Chicago's Millennium Park that cost $23 million to build, and looks like a drop of liquid mercury in the shape of a kidney bean. Kapoor was commissioned to create a sculpture for Millennium Park after he was selected by a committee of art patrons and representatives of art institutions in Chicago. On the topic of Cloud Gate, Kapoor said, "What I wanted to do in Millennium Park is make something that would engage the Chicago skyline…so that one will see the clouds kind of floating in, with those very tall buildings reflected in the work. And then, since it is in the form of a gate, the participant, the viewer, will be able to enter into this very deep chamber that does, in a way, the same thing to one's reflection as the exterior of the piece is doing to the reflection of the city around.” Kapoor was born in India in 1954, and moved to London to go to art school in the 1970's. Kapoor is associated with the "new British sculptors, " and his sculptures often combine elements of the formal vocabulary of minimalism with a sense of immateriality and visual mystery. |
