| Title | Congressman William L. Dawson campaigning, 1940's |
| Description | By 1948, Congressman Dawson was arguably the most powerful African American in Washington. Following the upset victory of President Harry Truman over Dewey in 1948, he was named Chairman of the House Committee on Government Operations in January, 1949. He was no longer the solitary African-American in Congress. In the 1944 elections, New York sent Rev. Adam Clayton Powell to join Dawson. Dawson served in Congress until 1970, when he retired. He died on November 11, 1970. |
