TitleCatalog, "Exhibition of the Art of the American Negro, " 1940
DescriptionIn 1940, to celebrate the "Diamond Jubilee, " the 75th anniversary of emancipation from slavery, the American Negro Exposition was organized at the Chicago Coliseum. The executive director of the Diamond Jubilee Exposition Authority, Truman K. Gibson, Jr., called on Alain Locke to organize an unprecedented national show of the work of African American artists. The art exhibition, which opened on July 4 and ran until September 2, 1940, drew huge crowds. Through extensive newspaper coverage, people living far from Chicago were introduced to the diversity and quality of art by African Americans. The earliest painting in the show dated from 1851. Robert Duncanson, Henry Tanner and Edmonia Lewis were represented. The contemporary art came from every region of the country. Bronzeville was especially proud when two Chicago artists--William Carter for watercolors, and Charles Davis for black and white--won first prizes.
