TitleFirst Annual Statement of the Trade and Commerce of Chicago, for the year ending December 31, 1858: reported to the Chicago Board of Trade by Seth Catlin, Superintendent
DescriptionIncluded in this commerce report to the Chicago Board of Trade is a listing of the various craft which sailed between Chicago and other lake ports during the 1859 season. Schooners made up the majority vessels, numbering 571, followed by brigs and propellers. Only six steamers sailed for commercial purposes to Chicago in that year. While nearly 750 vessels were officially recorded in the 1859 report, the listing did not include the tugs and other craft that were employed exclusively in the Chicago River and Harbor. This would have more than doubled the figure of marine activity to 1, 658.
