| Title | Chicago Crib, from Chicago Illustrated |
| Description | In the mid-1800s, as today, Chicago was supplied with water from Lake Michigan. At that time however, water was drawn only about one mile north of the Chicago River, into which the city sewers discharged refuse. The mixture of the lake and polluted river water found its way into the city's waterworks and was distributed throughout the population. Another means of securing pure water became necessary. In 1855, E.S. Chesbrough, City Engineer, devised a plan to obtain water from a point two miles from the shore and convey it through a tunnel to the city. Ground for the tunnel, which was five feet wide and five feet-two inches in height, was broken on March 17, 1864. In July 1865, the "crib, " destined for the lake-end of the tunnel, was towed into place. Literary description by James W. Sheahan. Illustrations by the Chicago Lithographing Company.
