TitleDaniel H. Burnham to Lyman J. Gage, President of the World's Columbian Exposition, February 13, 1891.
DescriptionDaniel H. Burnham's original 1891 cost estimate for construction of the World's Columbian Exposition topped $16, 000, 000. While the Exposition company was expected to bear the greatest financial responsibility in the construction of the Fair, Burnham included several suggestions for "outsourcing" specific services. Burnham's recommendations included having the elevated road (train) be financed by an outside company and having the fence surrounding Jackson Park and the Midway Plaisance be paid for by the advertisers who would be using the structure for promotion. Lakefront expenses in Burnham's plan included $100, 000 for landscape work, $56, 000 for water, sewerage and gas, and over $1, 200, 000 for buildings.
