East Side of the Transportation Building, 1893
East Side of the Transportation Building, 1893
TitleEast Side of the Transportation Building, 1893
DescriptionThe World's Columbian Exposition buildings stood with elegant facades, presenting a city in trompe-l'oeil, an optical illusion. They were designed to be temporary, however, and Fair visitors would recollect these ethereal monuments as though in a dream. At the close of the Exposition the great buildings, constructed of "staff, " a building material much like plaster-of-paris, did indeed disappear, deteriorated beyond repair or destroyed by fire. The deterioration of the main Exposition buildings is clearly seen in this photograph of the Transportation Building, taken after the Fair closed on October 30, 1893.
