Title	S.S. "Christopher Columbus" (Whaleback), 1893
Description	The S.S. Christopher Columbus is the most famous "whaleback" of the 43 ships of this type built. Whalebacks were developed in Duluth, Minnesota, by Captain Alexander MacDougall for freight service. The Christopher Columbus was the only ship of this type built for passenger service, and was first operated by the World's Fair Steamship Company to service the city of Chicago and the World's Columbian Exposition. After the Fair she sailed in competitions, and then serviced passengers on the Chicago to Milwaukee route under the colors of the Goodrich line. The Christopher Columbus made round-trips from Chicago to Milwaukee for 40 years. She went idle when the Goodrich Company fell victim to the Great Depression.
