TitleView of Chicago in Ruins from the Michigan Avenue Hotel, 1871
DescriptionStereograph. View of Chicago in Ruins from the Michigan Avenue Hotel, 1871. Lovejoy & Foster, photographers. Fifty years of steady growth ended on October 8, 1871, when the Great Chicago Fire destroyed three and one-half square miles of the city and 18, 000 buildings, including city hall, churches, banks, hotels, stores, warehouses, offices, and the homes of 100, 000 of its citizens. Chicago's south division was reduced to rubble, between 250 and 300 people lost their lives, and every structure from the Chicago River to Lincoln Park was in ashes and fiery ruin.
