| Title | Engraving of Kady Brownell in Army Clothing |
| Description | A black and white engraving of Kady Brownell from the book: Moore, Frank. "Women of the War: Their Heroism and Self-Sacrifice." Hartford, Conn.: S.S. Scranton & Co., 1866. She is wearing an army costume with a sash at her waist and with her sword in her right hand. Kady Brownell's husband, Robert, was an orderly sergeant of the eleventh company in the First Rhode Island Infantry and she was made the color-bearer of this company. "When the company went out to practise [sic] daily at the target, she carried her rifle, as well as the colors; and when her turn came, the men seldom restricted her to the three shots which were allowed to each. So pleased were they by her skill and coolness with the weapon, that she was allowed as many shots as she chose, and thus became one of the quickest and most accurate marksmen in the regiment." Moore, Frank. Women of the War: Their Heroism and Self-Sacrifice. Hartford, Conn.: S.S. Scranton & Co., 1866, p. 54-64. |
