| Description | A black and white photograph of Mary Ann Bickerdyke wearing a dark blouse with a shawl. On her blouse she is wearing two medals. Mary Ann Bickerdyke (1817-1901) of Illinois served as a Union nurse. She was a forty-four-year-old widow with three children when the Civil War began. She served as a nurse in hospitals in Cairo, Illinois and Memphis, Tennessee. The soldiers called her Mother "Bickerdyke." She fought with doctors for sanitary conditions, proper diets and medication, and traveled to major cities to raise funds for the sick and wounded. "Mother" Bickerdyke was beloved by the enlisted men, whose rights she championed, and was a favorite with Generals Grant and Sherman.
