DescriptionBlack-and-white reproduction of original albumen print of Savannah, looking up the River. Source: Barnard, George N. Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign, Embracing Scenes of the Occupation of Nashville, the Great Battles around Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain, the Campaign of Atlanta, March to the Sea, and the Great Raid through the Carolinas. New York, 1866. "The rebels had abandoned the works in General Barnum's front but a short time when the discovery was made. At sunrise the town was occupied by General Geary's division, whose splendid state of discipline will long be remembered by the citizens of Savannah. Prior to ordering the different commands to the portions of the city to be occupied by them, General Geary addressed the troops, asking that the reputation of the 'White Star Division' should be kept as far above the stains that marauding and pillaging would cast upon it, as it had been when in front of the enemy, by the tried bravery of officers and men."
