Sherman and his Generals
TitleSherman and his Generals
DescriptionBlack-and-white reproduction of original albumen print of Sherman and his Generals. From left to right: Major General O. O. Howard, Major General J. A. Logan, Major General Wm. T. Sherman, Major General Jeff. C. Davis, Major General H. W. Slocum, Major General J. A. Mower, Major General F. P. Blair. Source: Barnard, George N. Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign, Embracing Scenes of the Occupation of Nashville, the Great Battles around Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain, the Campaign of Atlanta, March to the Sea, and the Great Raid through the Carolinas. New York, 1866. "The group portrait of Sherman and his Generals had been made in Brady's Washington studio in May 1865. Brady later recalled the circumstances surrounding this sitting....'It was taken during the Grand Review in Washington in 1865...." The original negative of this image was marred by a protruding, out of focus element on the left side of the frame. A wood-engraving of this print, altered to include the standing figures of Generals Kilpatrick and Blair, was published in Harper's Weekly on July 1, 1865. A final retouched version of the photograph was subsequently produced by eliminating the blurred form on the left and inserting a seated figure of General Blair." Davis, Keith E. George N. Barnard: Photographer of Sherman's Campaign. (Kansas City: Hallmark Cards, Inc., 1990), p. 101-102.
