TitleColumbia S.C., from the Capitol
DescriptionBlack-and-white reproduction of original albumen print of Columbia taken from the Capitol. Source: Barnard, George N. Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign, Embracing Scenes of the Occupation of Nashville, the Great Battles around Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain, the Campaign of Atlanta, March to the Sea, and the Great Raid through the Carolinas. New York, 1866. "An incident that occurred on the afternoon of the 17th will be remembered with pleasure, showing as it does the respect with which the memory of the soldiers who fell in the Mexican war is regarded. Near the new Capitol was erected a bronzed palmetto tree as a monument to the soldiers of South Carolina who fell during the war with Mexico. In the sides of the pedestal which form the base of the monument are placed in bronzed letters the names of the fallen heroes; some ruthless campaigners were engaged in knocking off such of these letters as would designate their companies, when a number of soldiers interfered and posted a guard to prevent further depredations on a monument to the memory of men who died fighting their country's battles."
