TitleThe "Hell Hole" Battlefield of New Hope Church
DescriptionBlack-and-white reproduction of original albumen print of the Hell Hole Battlefield of New Hope Church. Source: Barnard, George N. Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign, Embracing Scenes of the Occupation of Nashville, the Great Battles around Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain, the Campaign of Atlanta, March to the Sea, and the Great Raid through the Carolinas. New York, 1866. "As night fell, a drenching rain-storm... commenced. The troops were rapidly fortifying their positions and continued their work until a rude breastwork was constructed. The officers were without tents or food....General Sherman and staff attempted to sleep in a sitting posture wrapt in in their coats and saddle blankets. The wounded and dead were lying in all directions. The battle... [began on] May 25 [and] resulted in a continued skirmish-fire, which was kept up for several days. Intrusive bullets were inconveniently plentiful. Camp-kettles filled with steaming coffee were suddenly emptied into the ashes of the fire. The quiet of the mess-table was invaded by singing Minies that broke the few remaining pieces of crockery belonging to the mess and sent scalding coffee into the wide legs of cavalry boots. Camp-stools that had seen service during long campaigns were splintered by bullet, and fragments of shell." Barnard, George N. Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign. (New York: Dover Publications, 1977), p. xiii.
