New York, 1866. "The opening of the battle of Resaca was a series of brisk engagements, resulting from the getting into position of different corps. On the 14th of May the divisions of Gerenal Newton (formerly Sheridan's), of the Fourth Corps, and General Judah, of the Twenty-third, made a determined attack on the rebel right. Although they did not succeed in carrying the entire position, they were enabled to secure such a line as to make their position annoying and to attract a considerable rebel force to the vicinity."
