"On a peninsula formed beneath the shadow of Lookout Mountain by the sinuous course of the Tennessee river is located the town of Chattanooga, which was occupied by the Army of the Cumberland immediately after the fierce battle of Chickamauga in September, 1863. The position, naturally strong, was at once fortified by the construction of forts, connected by carefully laid-out lines of rifle-pits extending to the river bank above and below the town."
