John Ross House
TitleJohn Ross House
DescriptionBlack-and-white reproduction of original albumen print of the John Ross House in Ringold, Georgia. Source: Barnard, George N. Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign, Embracing Scenes of the Occupation of Nashville, the Great Battles around Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain, the Campaign of Atlanta, March to the Sea, and the Great Raid through the Carolinas. New York, 1866. "Near the western entrance of the Rossville Gap is the house which was for a long time the house of John Ross, a chief of the Cherokee nation. The location is so fine, with reference to pure water and air, that it has been several times selected as a hospital site. The general hospital of Rosecrans' army was located here after the battle Chickamauga, but removed when the line was contracted to the limits of Chattanooga, when the house was at once occupied as a general hospital for the sick and wounded of Polk's corps of Bragg's army." Barnard, George N. Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign. (New York: Dover Publications, 1977), p. xi.
